ENVIRONMENT AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH
Ever since Hadeed started, making steel, protection of environment
and health of employees goes hand in hand with production
strategies. Hadeed recognizes that environment protection is a key
element of its business and community requirement.
Hadeed makes constant efforts and actively works towards improvement
of its environmental aspects. The company’s objectives and
commitments are stated in the environmental policy. With the
implementation of Environmental Management System Hadeed was awarded
the internationally recognized ISO 14001 certificate. This award
confirms to our customers, shareholders, local communities, business
partners, suppliers and other government organizations the
commitment to protect the environment.
Hadeed Takes part in various environmental related programs such as
World water day, Environmental day and Earth day.
In order to create an environmental culture, technical and general
training needs analysis for employees at different levels is
evaluated to create environmental awareness within and outside
Hadeed. It addition it organizes environmental related exhibitions
and awareness programs to enhance environmental education among the
employees and community.
Hadeed complies with all applicable legislation for the protection,
preservation and conservation of the natural environment and local
communities.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY: We at Saudi Iron & Steel Company (HADEED) recognize the
importance of protecting the environment and public health and will
assure that its operations are performed without compromising on
issues that are likely to impact HADEED and surrounding communities,
and will:
Pursue continual improvement in its
environmental performance and control;
Comply with applicable requirements
of prevailing local and International regulations as well as any
other codes of practice to which Hadeed subscribes;
Implement the Environmental
Management System to identify, assess and manage environmental
issues;
Ensure that all employees, including
contractors employees are trained and responsible for
environmental issues at their operating facilities;
Incorporate practical environmental
technologies and appropriate monitoring programs to ensure
pollution reduction and prevention;
Promote and research the recycling
and reuse of its by-products;
Optimize the use of resources;
Communicate and participate in
preservation of the global environment;
Communicate with the local community
on environmental issues;
HADEED will involve its employees, contractors, and local
community as responsible partners to meet the requirements of this
policy, and uphold the protection of the environment and public
health.
WASTE MANAGEMENT:
Hadeed activities ranges from recovery and recycling of waste
material. The byproducts are utilized in most efficient and
eco-friendly way in order to minimize the environmental impact. The
byproducts are used in various companies. 95% of the generated waste
is utilized in other industries and is therefore, considered as by
products. Slag generated from the process is processed and used as
aggregate in construction and for the paving of roads. All ferrous
wastes such as oxide fines, slurry and mill scale is utilized in
manufacturing of cement. Also the generated used oil and grease is
sent for recycling.
In order to ensure that all scrap used in the process is free from
any radioactive material, Radiation detection system is installed at
the gate to monitor scrap entering Hadeed.
Extensive and intensive research were generated involving SABIC
Research Center and some universities for the utilization of wastes.
In this regard Hadeed won the patent from US for use of BHD in ready
mix concrete. Other hazardous wastes that are generated in small
quantity are sent for treatment, incineration or land filled in an
authorized landfill.
WATER MANAGEMENT:
Pretreatment is employed to comply with local
applicable industrial wastewater quality standards and
regulations. Currently process water is being discharged as
effluent to central Waste Water Treatment Plant in Al-Jubail. Hadeed
objective is to minimize the consumption of make-up water and
reuse the water that is being discharged as effluent by about
95% by setting up a treatment facility to meet the discharge the
criteria.
Ground water quality is assessed by conducting ground water
monitoring, to detect any possible leak of contaminates that
could affect the ground water quality. Ground water monitoring
program is well established by monitoring wells at strategic areas
within Hadeed. The results of tests of all the parameters are
within established reference values.
AIR EMISSION:
Jubail Industrial City has one of the most stringent environmental
regulations, which are based on USEPA. As part of Hadeed commitment to
these regulations, air emission monitoring program is in place using
best available pollution control technology various control measures
are in place to monitor gases generated from the process.
Production areas have pollution control sources, such as baghouses
for the Steel Plant, each furnace has dedicated baghouse to control
its operational cycle of air. Air emission data indicated that the
air emission of NOx and SOx are far lower that the Royal commission
requirement.
As part of commitment, where ever-possible alternative option are
used that helps in tackling the global environmental problem. One
such is the phasing out of CFC based products. Hadeed is replacing
the existing system that employs or use CFC’s. The objective is to
eliminate CFC based equipment and products that affect the ozone
layer and comply with Montreal protocol to phase out the use of
CFC‘s.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET:
Online Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) from CD Rom has been installed and all employees have access to such MSDS through Hadeed intranet.
RADIATION DETECTION SYSTEM:
Hadeed being an ISO 14001 certified company, has the state of art
technology for detecting the radioactive material entering Hadeed
premises.
In order to ensure that all incoming scrap is free from any
radioactive material, Radiation detection system is installed at the
gate to monitor scrap carrying trucks entering Hadeed.
All trucks including scrap carrying trailers that enters Hadeed are
monitored. The system is very sensitive and is capable of detecting
very weak to strong radioactive material embedded in the scrap.
Hadeed ensures that all of its products are free from any
radioactive contamination.
